It bears a marked resemblance to Scott's industrial architecture, a famous example of which is Bankside Power Station (the home of the Tate Modern). Its tower stands 157 feet (48 metres) tall, six feet shorter than the top of St John's College Chapel and ten feet taller than the peak of King's College Chapel. Contemporary reports stated that in opening the building, Chamberlain referred to it as "this magnificent erection", although this phrase is also attributed by tradition to George V. The fictional "Dark Tower" in the novel of that name (attributed to C. S. Lewis) was a replica of this building.

Tags: Cambridge College Description: The 19th century neo-Gothic New Court, probably one of the most famous buildings in Cambridge, was the first College building on the west side of the river. Designed by Thomas Rickman and Henry Hutchinson, New Court was built between 1826 and 183 to accommodate the College's rapidly increasing numbers of students. Despite the College's original intention to get the architects to build another copy of Second Court, plans were eventually accepted for a fashionably romantic building in the 'Gothick' style. It is a three-sided court of tall Gothic Revival buildings, closed on the fourth side by an open, seven-bayed cross-vaulted cloister and gateway. It is four storeys high, has battlements and is pinnacled. The main portal has a fan vault with a large octangonal pendant, and the interior of the main building retains many of its original features including ribbed plaster ceilings in the mock-gothic style. Its prominent location (especially when seen from the river) and flamboyant design have led it to be nicknamed the "Wedding Cake."

A statue of the college founder, Henry VIII, stands in a niche above the doorway. In 1704, the UniversityÕs first astronomical observatory was built on top of the gatehouse. Beneath the founder's statue are the coats of arms of Edward III, the founder of King's Hall, and his five sons of who survived to maturity, as well as William of Hatfield, whose shield is blank as he died as an infant, before being granted arms.

Tags: Cathedral Ely River Ouse cold eels freezing riverside snow winter Description: Eel Hive. Willow and eels have both been integral to the Fenland landscape, being a source for the Fen people, for centuries. According to Bentham, eels were used as currency to pay taxes to the monastery, which traded them with the monks at Peterborough for stone which was then used to build the Cathedral. Grigs and hives, used to trap eels in the River Ouse, were made from willow. Soaked split rods were woven into small tunnel-like traps, which were then submereged overnight in the river. There is an eel hive in the Ely Museum. This work was commissioned by East Cambridgeshire District Council in collaboration with Commissions East. Elizabeth-Jane Grose 2004

Installed as part of the Victorian restoration, the Nave Ceiling was the work of two artists, Henry Styleman Le Strange, who painted the first six panels (counting from the west), and Thomas Gambier Parry, who painted the last six - you can observe a change of style between the sixth and seventh panels. The ceiling tells the story of the ancestry of Jesus, beginning with Adam (panel 1). and continuing through Abraham (panel 4). David (panel 8) and Mary (panels 9 and 10).

The church stands just a few hundred yards away from the cathedral, and in fact, St. Mary's is known to have been built by order of Bishop Eustace of Ely. The design retains good examples of Norman work, particularly around the north door. Much of the stained glass is of modern vintage, as is the peal of 8 bells in the Decorated period tower. The former vicarage of the church is known as Oliver Cromwell's House, as the Cromwell family lived there for 11 years beginning in 1636. Cromwell's youngest daughter was baptised in the church in 1638.

Tags: St Andrew's The Fens University Witchford floodlit popular Description: St Andrew's Church in Witchford was consecrated on 12th December, 1376. The Bishop's 'diary' for that year mentions that he came from his palace at Little Downham 'on the Friday after the Feast of the Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary'. However, Bishops in those days were not always very prompt in carrying out such duties! Pevsner's Guide suggests an early 14th century date. This would be indicated by the tracery of the large window on the south side of the nave and the East window. The style is known as the Decorated Period of English Architecture.
The Tower and the Font date from before 1150. Notice that the ancient font is big enough to baptise babies by submerging them completely!
The Church is now known as "St. Andrew's". Old county history books going back to 1742 give St. Nicholas as the Patron Saint.
The Church has had to endure three drastic but necessary restorations since 1850. The dedication of the church was changed by the vicar last century after one of these restorations.

Tags: All Saints Church The Fens Description: All Saints Church at St Ives is recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 and it is likely that one existed on the site long before that. However of the present church, the earliest identifiable structure dates from the 12th Century. The chancel was rebuilt in the 14th Century and the rest of the church rebuilt around 1470, so the bulk of what we see to day is of 15th Century date. All Saint's has not had much luck with its spire, it was blown down in 1741 to be rebuilt in 1748 and again in 1879 only to be demolished in 1918 as a result of an aeroplane colliding with it. So what we see today is the total rebuild of 1924.

Tags: Castle Rising England Norfolk UK castle ruin tourism tourist traditional Description: Castle Rising Castle is a massive stone ringwork and bailey fortress, founded by William de Albini. The impressive Norman hall-keep and handsome forebuilding, stands almost concealed within the formidable bank and ditch of the central oval enclosure. To the east, a small square gatehouse is set in the bank with a fragment of the 14th century brick curtain wall to one side. A rectangular enclosure strongly banked and ditched guards the gatehouse and to the west there is a smaller flanking enclosure. Also in the inner enclosure, are the foundations of an 11th century Norman chapel, hard against the huge defensive earthworks.
